Fishing Report, Snapper -

Mitch (aka Uncle) with a great fish caught the same day we were out! Finally! Its on! Dolphins, gannets, terns, seals and even a whale… simply chaos last Tuesday out in the middle of the Bay near the 50m mark. Myself and Pete were lucky enough to find this insane workup and everything we tried produced good pan sized fish. A softbait produced the biggest fish of the day but the slow jigs accounted for the most. We had our limit in under 2 hours and went home to share the bounty with friends and neighbours. The same day young...

Fishing Report, Snapper -

Bryon with a cracker Snapper! Firstly, my apologies for missing the last fishing report. I was sunning myself in Rarotonga and Aitutaki where I managed to squeeze in a fish and was rewarded with a coronation trout and small mahimahi that were enjoyed at the resort restaurant that night. Upon my return, I have been met with “You should’ve been here, the conditions and the fishing have been awesome!” Local kayak fishers Ryan and Bryon have been doing great. Bryon particularly, who, while slow-jigging in around 50m of water, pulled up an 80cm snapper – followed by an 83cm one!...

Matthew Bell with a tasty albacore caught off Waihau Bay. Our consolation prize! Firstly, my apologies for missing the last Fishing Report. I was away trying my luck for an SBT down Waihau Bay however the weather gods did not cooperate. We managed a day and a half and landed one albacore. In the Bay I haven’t been out for weeks as any small weather window seems to conflict with work. My mate has just reported a successful fishing charter trip where they got a good bin of pannies out from the black rocks. A number of shop regulars, who...

The BOISC 53rd TotalSpan Bay of Islands International Yellowtail Tournament has just completed their 4-day event for which the weather gods finally smiled. Forty teams including many returning Australian anglers who fish this tournament every year have been battling it out for bragging rights and the prize pool. There have been good numbers of fish weighed everyday along with measure or tag and release fish. The prize giving is...

James with the fish of the day last Tuesday. Subsequently released. The last fortnight has seen more weather windows than usual, and I have managed to get out twice. Plenty of kahawai schools in the Bay resulted in our bait easily caught. Whitebait was what the kahawai were feeding on and so the smaller narrow sliver twisty lures worked great. We then preceded to convert that bait into snapper. Drift fishing in 12 meters was productive and we caught fish on sliders, softbaits and big baits on the strayline setups. James (from Sydney) has recently brought a...
