Bay of Islands Fishing Report: Snapper & Bluefin Adventure

It's on again! Last week, we hit the waters again, targeting the elusive Bluefin and returning home with a boatload of snapper and trevally. The excitement kicked off when we spotted gannets diving and dolphins playing around the 60-65m depths near the 9 Pin. Although the workups were brief, drifting through the area proved fruitful, yielding several delicious pannie-sized snapper for dinner.

Just last Tuesday, we fished around Waiwiri Rock, joining over 20 other boats in the hunt for bluefin. The water was teeming with bait and birds, and I spotted some impressive underwater arches. We employed slow jigs and softbaits, resulting in exhilarating three-way hookups. In no time, our coolers were filled, and the families were thrilled!

One memorable moment came when Pete hooked into a real fighter, giving him quite the workout! This impressive fish measured 85cm and was quite hefty, estimated at around 24-25 lbs. After a quick snapshot, we released it back into the ocean, where it swam away strong.

The big bluefin are still hanging around Waiwiri Rock. Though I haven't landed one yet, several have been hooked, with one being an astonishing 208 kg last weekend. Just yesterday, the crew on the Defiance landed an impressive catch weighing 247.6 kg. Fingers crossed they stick around a bit longer; I can’t wait to land one myself!
