Bluefin, Fishing Report, Snapper, Tuna -

Hit and miss! This describes our fishing efforts over the last fortnight. We have had the most success with slow jigs out at the 60m mark but one days its’ good and the next nothing to be found. I suspect I might have put my strayline/bait gear away a little early as reports of good catches on baits and live-baits around the Black Rocks have been heard. Workups have been few and far between and often short lived when birds have finally been found. Last Monday we had a cracker morning with Snapper, Terakihi, Gurnard and a large Blue Mackeral...

Bluefin, Fishing Report, Tuna -

Kaide Parish with his fish of a lifetime! At the start of this report period we ventured out into the Bay to be greeted by bait balls and gannets! The fishing was great with some nice pannies falling to the “lazy” softbaits drifting out the back and a few more to slow jigs. The snapper are in great condition and already have roe which indicates an early spawn. However yesterday we tried again and struggled to find the fish or at least get a bite! Lots of bait and sign on the sounder and we did pick a nice pannie...

Ryan fishing from his kayak reports that the Screaming Reels cap catches fish! The fishing has been fantastic although the windy weather has limited the fishing opportunities. The large school snapper have arrived and a few days ago I weighed 2 pin fish for the Davey family. Young Tylers went 8.6kg but his Mum, Louise, beat him with a solid 9.75kg fish. Both pinfish for the BOI Swordfish Club. My fishing on the other hand has been somewhat average and we struggled last week to catch a feed. We followed the gannets around for most the morning and ended up...

Isla, fishing with her dad Manny, caught and released this beautiful snapper. Back in the Bay! And its alive with whales and dolpins. Fantastic day had observing bryde’s whales on one side, common dolphins on another and a pod of bottlenose dolphins – all at the same time. There were a few birds around but nothing really fired up however we did a few drifts at varying depths and caught enough for dinner. I currently have a hunger for tarakihi so when the snapper fishing is slow we head out to 60-65m and find the blue fuzz sign near the...

It feels odd to be writing this report while I’m supervising a planting crew near the Napier-Taupo road – it was -3 degrees this morning and we planted in the snow!! Fortunately, only a few days to go and then back to Russell. My fishing buddies tell me I haven’t been missing much weather wise so that’s some consolation I guess! Before I left we had 2 good weather days that I just had to fish. On the first day we fished the 55-60m zone with little success and then spotted a few gannets doing there thing around the 45m...
