Bay of Islands Fishing Report 26Jun24
Ben with his personal best Snapper. The Russell boat ramp has received a long overdue makeover with the broken bottom portion of the ramp repaired. Work is ongoing for the ramp parking area and by spring should be sealed and ready to go. Weather wise over the last fortnight hasn’t been great with lots of rain and wind. Nevertheless, there has been a day or two fishable and we have managed a feed each time continuing to strayline the shallows. The locals report some good-sized fish from the rocks or fishing relatively shallow. Local, Paul is using huge slabs of...

Rusty with the fish of the weekend. The weather was mint for Kings Birthday weekend and I was joined by Rusty and Nod from the big smoke. We fished Saturday and Sunday in near perfect conditions – hardly a breath of wind. Most of the time we straylined in the shallows and were rewarded with plenty of pannies. Then Rusty’s reel started screaming, and I called it a shark but as he got some line back the head shakes started and a beautiful moocher appeared. After the obilatory photo the fish was released. Unfortunately a bronze whaler was waiting and...

Ryan, fishing from a kayak, rewarded with a 18lb snapper! Not much to report this fortnight as came down with the dreaded Covid after returning from the Boat Show! But I have to say I had a great time at the show inspecting all the great products on display and dreaming of what could be! Back in the BOI, Ryan has been taking the opportunity provided to get out on his kayak and catch some great fish including the 18lber pictured below. Terry also reports he has caught some good fish around the 50cm mark off the beach.I finally got...

One happy Pete with the best fish of the day! Team “Zeus” has been out there doing it again! Photos of huge crayfish, kingfish and snapper have been an almost daily arrival in my inbox! Not sure where these fellows go but I’ve seen them turn left at the Nine Pin and head for the Cavalli’s? Not to worry, Captain Craig heads back to the USA end of this week which will allow the fish stocks to recover! Meanwhile I’ve continued with mostly straylining in the shallows and been rewarded with a feed each time. We’ve been using skippy, kahawai...

Lilia, visiting from France, happy with her first snapper! Strayling has been producing the goods although the largest fish we have caught most days are on an unattended softbait drifting way out the back. We’ve been fishing around 10-15m and most days we catch enough for a feed although we are plagued by high numbers of undersized fish. Fortunately using the non-offset circle hooks means most are quickly and safely released. Locals Ryan and Bryon have been doing well up the Waikare inlet fishing from the shore and report at the change of tide they have landed some nice fish...
