Bay of Islands Fishing Report - 27th November 2025
Finally! The Bay is officially on fire! I’m pleased to report a number of workups have been observed and some great school snapper under them. A story, too good not to be told! Last Tuesday morning we were out in a strong easterley wind with greater than 1 meter swells, which was quite “sporty” to say the least! I was fishing a slow pitch jig and hooked into a nice string puller when pop! I lost my lure. Knot failure!!! Reminder to self! Pay attention and check your rigs! Well, imagine our surprise when a few minutes later Barbara fishing...
Bay of Islands Fishing Report - 13th November 2025
The fishing reports are somewhat mixed with some anglers reporting school fish stacked up at the 30m mark and others (like myself) who struggle to find them. I’ve been out a few times over the past fortnight and my best success has been deep, around 75-80m on heavy slow jigs. Compared to last year, the Bay just hasn’t “fired” yet and despite marking a lot of bait, we haven’t encountered a decent workup. I’m finding I have to resort to adding a bit of bait on the slow jigs to generate a bite and this makes the day more interesting...
Bay of Islands Fishing Report - 30th October 2025
Labour weekend Saturday was a great day for fishing and then it went pear shape! Those who got out on the Saturday reported some nice fish being landed or released. The Kingies were attacking jigs around the Hole in the Rock while some XOS sized snapper were snagged! One customer came into the shop and brought a net because his one was too small to fit the snapper and some scales as he wanted to weigh it! Friday evening I snuck out and found that the school fish were still deep at 70m plus. Heavy jigheads and softbaits and heavier...
BOI Fishing Report - 2Oct25
Its on again! Managed to get out a couple of times chasing the Bluefin and have come home with a binful of snapper and trevally. Gannets and dolphins were encountered at the 60-65m area near the 9 pin and although the workups were short lived, a slow drift through the area resulted in some nice pannie sized snapper joining us for tea. Last Tuesday we fished around Waiwiri rock with 20 plus other boats, slow trolling livebaits for a bluefin bite. The area was literally covered in bait and birds and I noted some interesting arches underneath. Slow jigs and...
Bay of Islands Fishing Report - 18th September 2025
Hit and miss! This describes our fishing efforts over the last fortnight. We have had the most success with slow jigs out at the 60m mark but one days its’ good and the next nothing to be found. I suspect I might have put my strayline/bait gear away a little early as reports of good catches on baits and live-baits around the Black Rocks have been heard. Workups have been few and far between and often short lived when birds have finally been found. Last Monday we had a cracker morning with Snapper, Terakihi, Gurnard and a large Blue Mackeral...
