Nathan with a nice pannie destined for dinner at the Swordfish Club that night! To be honest, I’ve been struggling with little to show for a mornings fishing however this all changed yesterday with a great slider session in the 60m zone. The bite times from www.nzfishingnet.nz were bang on and all the crew got a fish or two including Nathan Mill visiting the Bay of Islands from Scotland. While we were fishing some skipjack tuna showed up close by so we trolled a softbait and caught a few. This has got me thinking that’s its time for a marlin...

Alexandrio from Argentia with a nice skipjack tuna. The weather has been great but the fishing poor (at least for me!). To date I’ve been out wide 4 days for one bite but never give up, it’s just a matter of time! Meanwhile, I’ve been kept busy at the weigh station. The most meritorious catch has to be Luke Roberts first marlin caught in a 14 foot tinny and on 15kg line to boot! Out to 200 meters and back at the weigh station by lunchtime – doesn’t get any better than that! I’m finding it difficult to locate some...

Luke Wiseman with a 52kg Yellowfin Tuna, caught solo. It was a busy Waitangi Day on the water and I was kept busy weighing fish, a yellowfin tuna and 3 striped marlin during the afternoon. And three fish were first’s for small boats and only one was weighed for the competition. The snapper and kingfish seem a little more difficult to find but out deeper has worked for me and reports are of good catches in shallow. The Pacific Motor Group Eldorado 2024 hosted by the Bay of Islands Swordfish Club was a huge success with 31 teams and 111...

Where did the last 4 weeks go??? I’m happy to report that it’s been a busy period with sales of salt ice, berley and bait through the roof! Reports from customers indicate that the fishing has been a hit and miss affair but there have been some notable catches. Johnny and his family have been enjoying some great fishing including a couple of 20lbers off the Tapeka rocks. I’ve managed to get out a few times and we haven’t missed yet although it’s been a bit harder to find where the fish are holding. Again, it’s been a case of...

The snapper continue to bite well most days in the Bay of Islands. About a week ago, Grant Dixon joined us for a fish aboard Merrin. He told me it was to ‘check up on the accuracy of my reports’, as well as tackle-test some new Vexed gear and to secure a few snapper for the smoker for the Dixon Christmas lunch. And I couldn’t have planned it better, we arrived and on my first cast hooked up on the mighty Nomad Squidtrex with what turned out to be the best fish of the day. This would have been matched by Grant’s...
