Bryon with a cracker Snapper! Firstly, my apologies for missing the last fishing report. I was sunning myself in Rarotonga and Aitutaki where I managed to squeeze in a fish and was rewarded with a coronation trout and small mahimahi that were enjoyed at the resort restaurant that night. Upon my return, I have been met with “You should’ve been here, the conditions and the fishing have been awesome!” Local kayak fishers Ryan and Bryon have been doing great. Bryon particularly, who, while slow-jigging in around 50m of water, pulled up an 80cm snapper – followed by an 83cm one!...

Mitch with a nice snapper taken on a slider during a mid-week mission. The weather continues to be mostly settled and the shop has been doing a steady trade as a result. I went out last week for a morning fish and Mitch (aka Uncle) caught a thumper of a snapper on the old faithful slider. I’ve lost my Mojo! Between cyclones, power outages, internet and EFTpos failures, I just need a good fishing day. A chance finally came last Saturday and (drum roll..) we caught nothing! Not at all what was anticipated. I guess you gotta have these poor days to really appreciate the good days! Meanwhile, reports of meritorious catches keep rolling in. Southern visitor James Lentjies – captain of the Highlanders – came into Screaming Reels the other day enquiring about where to fish off the rocks, so I invited him out on the Stabicraft the next morning. He got three decent snapper, all PBs. And as it turns out, he also plays No. 7 for the Highlanders – lucky number!
