Bay of Islands Fishing Report: Snapper Insights – April 30, 2026

The Bay of Islands continues to be a prime destination for anglers, even with rising fuel costs affecting travel plans. Many are shifting focus to local fishing spots, and luckily, this time of year means you can still catch quality snapper right in the mangroves. For those looking to save on fuel, shore-based fishing has proven fruitful as well!

Over the past fortnight, the weather has been welcoming, allowing for some great fishing experiences. We have been exploring shallow areas near Robbies, utilizing both softbaits and dead baits. Interestingly, straylining has emerged as the top method for enticing snapper, although softbaits still have their moments, snagging a few nice catches. While the fish might not be giants, their numbers are impressive, and they’re in phenomenal eating condition!

As we look back at ANZAC weekend, anglers reported some excellent fishing trips—particularly for kingfish, which are thriving this time of year, albeit requiring longer travel to reach traditional fishing spots.

Looking ahead, mark your calendars for the International Yellowtail tournament, set for June 7 through June 12. Spots are filling fast, so be sure to register early!
