Bay of Islands Fishing Report: February 2026 Highlights

The Eldorado Billfish tournament took place from February 26-28, and we entered our impressive 2050 Stabi to take on the big leagues. The conditions were certainly sporty, but nothing we couldn’t handle! During the second day, we celebrated a double catch of yellowfin tuna, followed closely by my personal win—a Mahi-mahi that earned me a club pin fish! We spotted two marlin that day, but despite their presence, we couldn’t land a bite. Remarkably, only one broadbill swordfish was tagged throughout the tournament!

The tournament results were quite entertaining:

• Banana Trophy, Biggest Blunder: Garry Townley aboard Merrin—always remember to bring your riggers down before revving up the ramp! It’s all in good fun!
• Heaviest Other Species: John Edlin with a 23.25kg yellowfin tuna aboard Bellevie.
• Male Angler Most Points: Brad Batterton, securing 500 points.
• Winning Team: Resolution led by Skipper Jeff Douglas.
• Best Crewman: Hammer on board.

In the Bay, snapper and kingfish catches have seen fluctuations. Our deep-sea excursions yielded minimal results, while others reported good hauls in shallower waters. Additionally, those who ventured out earlier this month reported even better luck with snapper.

Looking ahead, mark your calendars for the Russell Volunteer Fire Brigade Annual Gamefish Tournament on March 19-21, followed by the Truckers and Loggers Tournament from March 26-28. These events bring together local enthusiasts and are great opportunities for networking!
