The Bay of Islands continues to provide great snapper fishing. My good mate, Tony from Tauranga, came up for last weekend to get his annual “fix” of fishing in the BOI. And it didn’t disappoint. The 1st day we got two fish around the 20lb mark but unfortunately our release efforts failed. My new lure is the Squidtrex which I have been fishing consistently for 3 weeks. On Fire! The Bay of Islands is simply on fire as the school fish have arrived and the weather has been great! Happy to report that every time we’ve been out, some great fish have been caught. The bite times from fishing.net.nz have been spot on, we fished for 3 hours with little to show for it and them boom, at the predicted time all hell broke loose! Interestingly, I haven’t come across a single work up in the last 2 weeks, but there this plenty of bait showing on the sounder. Find the bait sign, and drifting through it...

Regular customer Alex drops his line solo and boom — a 23lb snapper on the first drop! Some keen young lads brave the wet and windy conditions at Tapeka rocks and land three great snapper. Charter operators are finding good kingfish and hapuka out deep.

It's on! Dolphins, gannets, terns, seals and a whale — chaos at a massive workup in 50m of water. Softbaits and slow jigs fill the limit in under 2 hours. Mitch (aka Uncle) also has a cracker day around Cape Brett with some XOS fish.
