BOI Fishing Report - 3Sep26 - The BIG Bluefin are back!
The day after I submitted the last report we were out at our usual spot when we heard of a fish to be weighed over the VHF. Turned out to be a Pacific Bluefin tuna caught while livebaiting for Kingfish. The Angler was Mark Bell aboard Reel Mate and his fish weighed an impressive 213kg! The same day we heard of another fish weighed at 183kgs although no further details are known. Both fish were caught around Wairere rock.
The Monday following we headed out for a look but didn’t manage to get a bite, although there was some good schools of koheru busting up. On the way back we stopped and deployed jigs at the 65m mark which was timed with a minor bite period. It worked with a dozen nice panny sized snapper coming home for dinner. The previous trip was a mixed bag with snapper, kahawai, terakihi and some XOS blue mackerels which attacked jigs on the descent and retrieve.
News from around town indicates some good rock based fishing with some sizeable fish being caught. Unfortunately the last week has been mostly unfishable with very windy conditions. I’m now waiting for the next fishing day….
