BOI Fishing Report - 20Aug26 - Record fish by Juniors

It seems that over the last fortnight I’ve spent as much time at the weigh station as I have fishing! The first weigh was for junior angler Tyler Davey who landed an impressive 15.25kg kingfish on 3kg line. Another pending record for Tyler who also recently scooped up a heap of junior prizes at the Whangaroa Sport Fishing Club annual prize giving. 

We have ventured out a couple of times and I have to admit we’ve struggled a bit to find the fish. On the first day we fished for about 7 hours with only 2 snapper in the bin and eventually found them in 60m of water. We experienced an insane short-lived bite which included two very good sized Tarakihi and half a dozen snapper. We have been adding small strips of fish bites on one of the slow jig assist hooks and this certainly increases the range of species caught. The largest snapper of the day was caught on a Squidtrex that was fished as a trailing softbait fished on the drift. On our 2nd trip out we got absolutely drenched and called it short as a big black front rolled into the bay. Not a total loss as caught a heap of slimy mackerel for bait and enough snapper for tea.

The next weigh was also for a junior angler, Jai Roberts, who caught a 197.5kg broadbill swordfish that he battled for a couple of hours. Great to see the young anglers out there doing it!
