Bay of Islands Fishing Report 1May24
Lilia, visiting from France, happy with her first snapper!
Strayling has been producing the goods although the largest fish we have caught most days are on an unattended softbait drifting way out the back. We’ve been fishing around 10-15m and most days we catch enough for a feed although we are plagued by high numbers of undersized fish. Fortunately using the non-offset circle hooks means most are quickly and safely released.
Locals Ryan and Bryon have been doing well up the Waikare inlet fishing from the shore and report at the change of tide they have landed some nice fish in the 40-50cm range. As I write up the report these rascals are somewhere out in 70m with Craig Martin on Zeus, catching some nice kingfish which they report “are on the chew!”
There have been some nice fish caught during the Juniors National tournament. I recently weighed a 4kg skipjack tuna caught by young Flynn Rogers on 10kg line, aboard No Mischif, which is a new club record. Also notable is Blake Barkers striped marlin caught on 8kg aboard Rowe De’O, which weighed in at 95.6kg, a new club line class record. Great to see the juniors out there, doing it!
