Bay of Islands Fishing Report 13Jun24

Rusty with the fish of the weekend.

The weather was mint for Kings Birthday weekend and I was joined by Rusty and Nod from the big smoke. We fished Saturday and Sunday in near perfect conditions – hardly a breath of wind. Most of the time we straylined in the shallows and were rewarded with plenty of pannies. Then Rusty’s reel started screaming, and I called it a shark but as he got some line back the head shakes started and a beautiful moocher appeared. After the obilatory photo the fish was released. Unfortunately a bronze whaler was waiting and up popped half the fish, which we rescued and utilised. I shouldn’t said Shark!

Meanwhile local fisherman Terry is doing so well off the rocks that his boat is lonely! Murray the Hammer is also doing well in the shallows, fishing from his kayak. Locals, Ryan and Carl went straylining and Ryan got the fish of the day, a 12lber using the KLT hooks I sold him! Freshly caught kahawai was the bait of the day.

The BOISC 54th TOTALSPAN YELLOWTAIL INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT got underway on Monday as the weather was not kind for the planned Sunday start. This year there are 94 anglers in 27 teams competing, including 12 juniors and 8 ladies. After 3 days (4th and final day of fishing is currently underway), there have been around 100 Kingfish weighed, tagged and released or measured and released. The heaviest weight to date is 23.85kgs.

Come into the shop to check out the latest in gear, get your bait, ice and berley, and most importantly, some genuine intel! We have reduced our operating hours for the winter period and are open from 9.00am to 4pm, Weds, Fri and Sat, Sun. As always, if you urgently need some supplies after hours just give me a call.
