Bay of Islands Fishing Report 7Mar22

Nathan with a nice pannie destined for dinner at the Swordfish Club that night!

To be honest, I’ve been struggling with little to show for a mornings fishing however this all changed yesterday with a great slider session in the 60m zone. The bite times from www.nzfishingnet.nz were bang on and all the crew got a fish or two including Nathan Mill visiting the Bay of Islands from Scotland. While we were fishing some skipjack tuna showed up close by so we trolled a softbait and caught a few. This has got me thinking that’s its time for a marlin livebait session!

A number of customers have reported good catches in shallow with both softbaits and natural bait but I think the tides and timing are the key here. Early morning and late evening returning the best results when the tide is changing. The kingfish are harder to find but customer Craig has got a few up towards the Cavalli Islands.

I haven’t weighed any gamefish for awhile but watching social media indicates a few are still around. I’m going to have another crack over the next few days.

Unfortunately, the Cater Marine Small boats competition was postponed until late March (dates to be confirmed) due to bad weather but next on the calendar is the Mainstream Reel Ladies on the 9-10 March. A total prize pool of $40,000 is up for grabs and at this stage the weather is looking mint!

Come into the shop to check out the latest in gear, get your bait, ice and berley, and most importantly, some genuine intel! We are open from 9.00am to 5pm, everyday except Sunday closing at 3pm. As always, if you urgently need some supplies after hours just give me a call.
